Beddington Lane is set to close for around 16-weeks following gas leaks 'historically' in the area.

The closure, which started today ( January 4), is due to essential gas main replacement work by the SGN gas company.

The works are scheduled to last around four months and will be carried out in four phases.

SGN gas company started phased work between the junction with Brookmead Road and outside Elberon Avenue today.

The two bus stops in Beddington Lane between Elberon Avenue and the roundabout with Coomber Way will be suspended.

A signed diversion will be in place via Purley Way, Mitcham Road and Croydon Road.

A statement from SGN online said: "We know that during the coronavirus outbreak, our communities will rely on us now more than ever to keep them safe and warm.

"The safety of our communities and our employees will remain our number one priority in the weeks and months ahead.

"We need to carry out safety-critical work to upgrade the gas network in your area.

"This needs to go ahead now, rather than wait until the pandemic passes, to ensure your local community continues to receive a safe and reliable gas supply.

"Following close consultation with the London Boroughs of Sutton and Merton, our project will start on January 4 and last approximately 16 weeks.

"We understand that people can get frustrated by roadworks. However, the new plastic pipe has a minimum lifespan of 80 years.

"This means that when the work is complete, local residents will continue to enjoy the benefits of a safe and reliable gas supply for years to come."
