A couple in Borehamwood have been fined after after noise complaints were made against them.

Steven Pilgrim, 28, and Becky Akehurst, 26, both of Rowan Court, Theobald Street, were each fined hundreds of pounds after being accused of playing music too loudly.

Pilgrim and Akehurst were found guilty at St Albans Magistrates Court on November 16 of five offences of failing to comply with a noise abatement notice - despite not turning up to court.

They were each fined £300 with costs of £648 and a mandatory victim surcharge of £32 after being taken to court by Hertsmere Borough Council.

The council says the noise issue was only resolved after its officers raided the flat in Rowan Court on October 29 2019 after gaining a warrant.

The council seized approximately 20 media CDs, a Blu-ray player, five mini speakers, two large stand up home theatre speakers, a wooden cabinet with built in speakers and two subwoofers.

A forfeiture order was granted by the court meaning the council does not have to return the seized equipment to the couple.

The council's enviro-crime officer, Harry Tuck, said: "This type of behaviour is not acceptable and there are robust powers available to address anti-social behaviour.

"We are very happy with the court’s decision to grant a forfeiture order, as this sends out a very strong message - keep it down, or lose it."

Councillor Seamus Quilty, portfolio holder for environment, added: "This shows that the council will take a firm stance against those who commit noise nuisance with so little disregard for their neighbours."
