FIREFIGHTERS were called to extinguish flames in a basement flat.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue (ESFR) went to Rose Hill Terrace, Brighton, at 3.32pm yesterday afternoon to reports of a fire.

"On arrival, it was found to be a fire in a basement level flat," a spokesman for the service said.

"It was extinguished using two breathing apparatus and a hose reel."

A passerby said: "One engine was parked up in the street, and a hose appeared to stretch into a nearby house.

"I couldn’t see or smell any smoke.

"A car pulled up as I was waking past. Two people jumped out and ran towards one of the houses.

"I hope no one was hurt."

One pump remained at the scene at about 6pm, ESFR said.
