Sutton authorities are set to address safety concerns regarding the junction of Downs Road, with Cotswolds Road following a crash that took place last week.

On November 11, police were called to reports of a collision between two vehicles at around 7.28 am.

LAS, police and the London Fire Brigade attended and took the woman to hospital with leg injuries.

The incident raised major concerns amongst residents who claim that the junction has been a concern for "decades".

Resident Saurabh Bhargava, who witnessed the incident said: "It was distressing to see the driver being rescued by the emergency services.

"Crossing that junction is like walking on a landmine, one single mistake and you put yours and fellow road user's life at risk - it's the same for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.

"It's high time the council resolve this, else they'll soon have blood on their hands."

Sutton MP Paul Scully addressed concerns to Sutton Council, TfL and Surrey County Council.

He acknowledged that councillors in Belmont and resident associations have both “pressed” the issue to Sutton Council. He went on to say that although Sutton Council needs to lead on the issue, a multi-agency perspective from Tfl and Surrey County Council is also needed.

The Sutton MP also spoke about how nearby developments could have a further impact on the junction.

He said: "With the development of the London Cancer Hub on the horizon, a new hospital being built in the next few years, the presence of a school that children travel to on foot as well as the Royal Marsden in the immediate local area means this junction and the surrounding roads are not going to become quieter any time soon.

"I also understand there is funding available concerning the Cancer Hub that Sutton has been given, and that it might be appropriate to dedicate some of this cash to improving safety for the surrounding roads."

A spokesperson for Sutton Council said that 'short-term measures' to improve safety at the junction are being considered.

"We are working with the police to establish the exact details of the collision.

"In the meantime, the council is considering short-term measures, such as new road markings/signage and repainting existing road markings.

"We will then consider the next steps for reviewing the junction layout in cooperation with Transport for London and other partners.

"This junction is close to the new London Cancer Hub site and has been identified for transport improvements as part of that major development."

The junction will be an item on the agenda for the Sutton South Local Committee on November 26.
