Carshalton Netball club has successfully secured funding to repurpose two out of five of the tennis courts in Carshalton.

The "great news" follows a petition to Sutton Council which saw over 800 signatures call to repurpose Carshalton tennis courts.

Following a submission to the council's Neighbourhood Fund consultation, the club will receive funding to transform one court into a multipurpose sports facility and the other into a netball court.

The remaining three courts will be updated providing a first-class sports hub in the heart of the village.

MORE: Mission to transform sports courts in Carshalton

Mairéad Agnew formed the sports club back in 2018 when she asked if anyone wanted to join her to play Netball.

"I have been on a mission to find a local, free to use netball court and it was soon apparent that there were none," says Mairéad.

She added: "As a non-competing, social netball team my plan for the club has always been to keep costs to an absolute minimum so we can be inclusive for everyone.

"There are a great many free to use facilities for male-dominated sports such as Football and Basketball in the borough but sadly not Netball, until now."

In 2019 Sutton Council granted the team permission to regenerate the courts in Carshalton Park.

Mairéad Agnew said: "Sutton Councils Neighbourhood fund is helping my dream become a reality.

"This new netball court will not only mean a great deal to us as we won't have the expensive court overheads to fund. It will also mean that we are out in the great outdoors- which is more important now than ever.

"I am really looking forward to seeing girls and women either practising with school friends ahead of league matches or simply shooting some hoops with their families- It will benefit all ages.

" I look forward to seeing the courts in action."
