Marlow’s very own Picnic in the Park has been cancelled – the week it was due to take place.

Picnic in the Park, which was a compromise of the usual Pub in the Park, was launched after the latter was twice called off this year due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

It was due to start on September 24 and was to last until September 27.

However, in an announcement that was published on September 21, Tom Kerridge revealed that the four-day festival has now been scrapped due to the current crisis.

It was going to take place in Higginson Park.

In their statement, Pub in the Park said: “We have been proud to operate 14 successful socially-distanced events this summer since the rules allowed, but at no point have we taken risks with the health of our visitors.

“We have delivered a large amount of joy in a safe and reassuring way.

“We are sorry to disappoint everyone who was planning to attend.

“We will keep inventing safe ways to have fun, [whilst] always working closely with the authorities and within the guidelines.

“We would like to thank all our amazing customers, our artists, our chefs, and our team, all of whom have supported us this summer.

“We hope to be able to present this brilliant line-up of talent in Marlow at some point in the future.

“Despite the event being designed for social distancing within groups of six, the decision was taken by the organisers to protect the safety of the visitors, participants, and residents of the town.

“All parties including the relevant authorities were consulted.”

Tom Kerridge then added: “In the last few days, it has become clear that the national picture is changing dramatically and there are significant new risk factors which are not yet clearly understood.

“Whilst we are really disappointed to take this decision, our priority has always been the safety of all involved and our hometown of Marlow.”

Big-name musicians and comedians such as Rick Astley, Jack Savoretti, Dara Ó Briain, Josh Widdecombe, Mark Watson, and Reginald D Hunter were all due to perform in Marlow.

Refunds will be issued to anyone who bought tickets.
