WEM Harvest Market is set to go ahead this year despite Covid-19 enforced restrictions.

The 11th harvest market, held by Wem Combine Harvesters, will take place on Saturday, September 26.

The market will be open from 9am to 1pm and take place in Wem Town Hall, Wem Youth Club and on Wem Jubilee Square.

Shelagh Richardson from Wem Combine Harvesters says the market has been able to go ahead thanks to the relative low infection rate of Covid-19 in Shropshire.

"We did not think that we would be holding our 21st market in the Year of the Plague," said Shelagh. "The Spring Market should have been our 21st but Covid-19 prevented its operation.

"The group wondered whether we would be able to hold this market but given that other Wem markets are operating, the infection rate is low in Shropshire, and people in this area are behaving very responsibly, there was no reason not to go ahead.

"The number of traders has had to be reduced to allow adequate spacing and other anti-Covid-19 measures have needed to be put in place.

"It will be different in that publicity is being limited to the local area, Wem and the small towns and villages around."

This year several familiar market traders will return, including Battlefield Farm Shop, Pantry at Manor Farm and Powell’s Pork Pies as well as various craft, plant and information stalls.
