Wycombe manager Gareth Ainsworth has admitted that he wants his players to enjoy their first season in the Championship.

The Chairboys were the surprise package in League One last season, as they won promotion to England's second tier following their play-off final victory against Oxford at Wembley.

But with the Adams Park outfit being one of the favourites to go down this year, Ainsworth wants his team to make the most of their historical debut season in the Championship.

Speaking ahead of the club’s opening league fixture against Rotherham United this Saturday, Ainsworth spoke about his ‘love’ for the club and what sees in the players on a daily basis.

He also spoke about being compared to the other managers in the league.

Ainsworth said: “I know there are added pressures and massive pressures with those people [the other managers] and if anything, I’ve got less pressure as the expectation is more than likely less.

“But I love coming in here every day, putting the music on in the gym, watching these boys every day and they’re excited to be playing in the Championship.

“They’re coming up to me saying ‘gaffer, I want to play in the first game, I want to play in these big, shiny stadiums.’

“It is the heart that counts, and I get a buzz from that, as well as multi million-pound players coming in and seeing that they want to be a part of it.

“It will be a fantastic season and whatever happens on Saturday, it will be the highest position that Wycombe Wanderers have ever been in - win, lose or draw.

“My aim this season is to enjoy it, as that is what life is all about.”

Wycombe’s match against Rotherham will kick-off at 12.30pm.
