Wycombe manager Gareth Ainsworth is aiming that the Chairboys ‘will not be forgotten’ in their first-ever season in the second-tier of English football.

Ainsworth’s men defied the odds to be promoted to the Championship after they defeated Oxford United 2-1 at Wembley Stadium on July 13, but bookmakers believe Wycombe are one of the favourites for relegation this coming season.

The odds of Sheffield Wednesday, who will start the season on -12 points after they were found guilty of breaching the EFL’s profitability and sustainability rules, have got better than odds to stay up than Wycombe.

But Ainsworth believes his side will not be a pushover in the coming campaign.

Speaking after the Brentford game, he said: “All I want is Wycombe will be a team that you don’t come to where you’re automatically going to get three points.

“We want to make it known that we are in the Championship, however out of place it may look to people.

“We’re going to give everything and enjoy this ride as it is a fantastic achievement for this club to be the Championship.

“We don’t want to be forgotten.

“We want to make sure that people know they have played Wycombe and it was a tough game.

“We may be a little different in some aspects, but we will never stop trying to go forward and working hard for each other.

“We have got some big players that are coming back into the team but I know Brentford too.

“They have nine internationals; I’ve got none yet!”

Wycombe’s first game at their of their historic Championship season will be against Rotherham on Saturday, September 12 at Adams Park.

Their first away game will be against Blackburn Rovers seven days later, the team that Ainsworth supported growing up.
