Sutton Council has announced a series of measures to tackle the ongoing flooding issues under Wallington Bridge.

The news comes after a van driver was pictured trapped under the bridge as parts of the UK was hit with flash flooding last week.

The van driver was left stranded until a worker helped him escape from his vehicle at around 4.20 pm on August 13.

People took to Twitter to discuss the ongoing issues.

A spokesperson for Sutton Council said:

"The road under the Wallington railway bridge was closed due to flooding after the heavy rainfall last Thursday afternoon.

"Our contractors and emergency planning team attended the site, cleared the gulleys and sent a mechanical sweeper to clear the sludge.

"The water level subsided quickly and the road reopened on Thursday evening.

"The Council is working with different agencies, including the water company and Network Rail, to develop options for long-term flood alleviation around the Wallington Bridge area.

"Initial modelling has taken place and more detailed plans are being developed.

"We have also installed monitoring equipment at Wallington Station to allow the Council to respond promptly to increases in the water level at this location and take appropriate action."
