Sutton Council, Sutton Housing Partnership and Barnardo’s have joined forces to support unaccompanied asylum-seeking young people.

The ‘Floating Support Service’ is focused on building supported housing capacity for young people who have arrived in the UK and into the care of Sutton.

Many of these young people upon reaching the age of 18 still won't have a decision on their asylum- which means that they are not entitled to public funds, can't work and have limitations on education options.

Unaccompanied asylum seeking children and young people often have unique support needs and shared housing helps to build communities and relationships for young people with limited connections, reduce isolation and risk of further exploitation.

The project supports those who’ve faced challenges and are now preparing to live independently.

Your Local Guardian:

Councillor Marian James, Chair of the People Committee said: “We understand the challenges facing these young people and we want to build support to help them regain and develop their independence.

"We are ambitious for all children and young people in Sutton and part of this is empowering those who may be facing greater challenges, often which are outside of their control.

"This project represents a great collaboration, to ensure that these children and young people are able to access a broader range of resources than they would have traditionally been able to.”

The intensive support will include regular visits from their Housing Managers and Barnardo’s support workers.

Colleagues from Sutton Council and Councillor Marian James attended the property yesterday and met with young people at a social distance to find out more about their experiences.

Lynn Gradwell, Director for Barnardo’s London said: “We are delighted to be working with our partners in Sutton to provide this new service which will help give young people who have faced the most unimaginable and harrowing start in life a more positive future in the UK.”
