Two people were airlifted to hospital last night after a 'serious crash' on the M25, bringing traffic to a complete standstill.

Traffic ground to a halt for several hours after a crash involving a motorbike around 2pm, July 11, with emergency services shutting down the road.

Two air ambulances landed on the motorway, and Kent Police said that two people had been injured and had been airlifted to hospital.

Police also said the road will be closed "for some time," and drivers have reported long queues forming up with reports of several hours of delays.

Despite the long wait, pictures on social media showed dozens of drivers queueing up and enjoying an ice cream from a nearby van which was also trapepd in traffic.

Highways England have said Kent Police and Traffic Officers are currently at the scene of the "serious collision", and the road could be shut for three hours.

Travel service Inrix says: "M25 anticlockwise blocked, stationary traffic due to accident and serious accident, a motorbike involved at J5 M26.

"The motorbike has crashed after the clockwise exit slip to the A21 Southbound - this slip road runs parallel to the M25 anticlockwise. Traffic has been stopped while the air ambulance attends."

Your Local Guardian:

The A21 in Kent is closed southbound between the M25 J5 at Chevening Interchange and the A25 junction near Chipstead.

Highways England say the link road between the M25 J5/M26 will remained closed while a collision investigation is carried out, with Kent Police managing the scene and traffic management.

"Traffic on the clockwise M25 is still able to join the A21 southbound at J5. There are severe delays on the M25 anti-clockwise between J6 and J5 due to the incident."

Drivers are advised to stay away, but some trapped in their cars have made the most of being trapped near an ice cream van.

Pictures on Twitter show a queue forming on the motorway as people lined up outside the Mr Whippi van, before dashing back to their car.

Traffic officers started to disperse the traffic shortly before 4.30pm.
