Police have launched a murder investigation after a man was shot dead in Cheam last night.

A spokesperson for the Met Police said they were called to the scene on Brocks Drive in North Cheam shortly after 1.10am in the early moments of June 19.

They arrived with armed officers and found a man, believed to be in his mid-20s, with a gunshot wound on Brocks Drive.

He was pronounced dead at the scene at 1.45am.

Police tape ringed the residential area where the shooting happened on Friday afternoon with a crime investigation scene still in place.

Scotland Yard said the family of the victim, who have been informed, are "devastated" following the incident, though the victim has not yet been formally identified.

Metropolitan Police Detective Chief Inspector Richard Leonard said: "We are in the very early stages of our investigation and at this time need to hear from residents or people who were walking or driving through Brocks Drive around the time of the incident.

"Did you see anyone acting suspiciously? No matter how insignificant it may seem, you could have crucial information.

"A man has lost his life in violent circumstances and his family have been devastated.

"They need and deserve answers and the community can help us provide them.

"If you have information, video or images that could help us, please contact us immediately."

No arrests have been made and a crime scene remains in place.
