A group of friends from Cheam have raised thousands of pounds through their 'send a scrunchie' campaign.

Lydia Varney, 22, decided to get her friends and family together to help create scrunchies to raise money for Crisis UK.

The campaign allows supporters to select a scrunchie to send to their loved ones - with a choice on how much they would like to donate as a method of payment.

Each order is accompanied by a personalised note card to help boost peoples moods, whilst also raising money for the homeless at the same time.

So far, the friends have created and sold more than 600 scrunchies which have been sent to people all over the country during the pandemic.

The team behind the campaign consists of; Lydia Varney, Victoria Hillman, Elise De Bono, Carolyn Varney, Jonathan Heasman and Josh Carne.

Lydia Varney, said: "I've always been really passionate about supporting the homeless and vulnerable.

"I wanted to be able to make sure that the charities are still able to operate during the pandemic.

"Aside from having stacks of fabric ready to go- I had no website, artwork or any idea of how the fundraiser would be received.

"However, my friends were so supportive and so excited to get on board the minute I explained the idea.

Speaking about how the public has responded to the campaign, Lydia added: "The generosity people have shown is staggering.

"Not only have people been so kind with their money, but we have also received beautiful fabric donations, stamps, and so many words of encouragement.

"I am so thankful to everyone who has ordered a scrunchie, shared our posts, or made donations.

"It has been inspiring to think of the difference we have been able to make together.

"We hope this encourages others to find a way to use their skills to help people."

Donations reached £3,358 at the time of publishing.
