Merton has found ways to come together to pay tribute to those who served in the Second World War despite UK lockdown.

VE Day 75 was celebrated across Merton last week, through music, banners and elderly residents reflecting on what life was like during the war.

Here are some of our favourite tributes:

Mr and Mrs Senthilingam, Graham Road, Wimbledon

Your Local Guardian:

Senthilingam Sinnadurai, 77, and Amirtha Senthilingam, 68, decorated their house with banners, posters and leaflets to inform residents about Wimbledon during the war.

Mr Sinnadurai said: "When the war started my parents were in Malaysia, I was born in a bunker in 1942.

"My mother told me she went into labour when a siren was going off and she was rushed into a bunker.

"At that time, Malaysia was Malaya and it was a British colony, this meant I was able to come to Britain in 1961.

"The British government gave me a visa and looked after me, so I celebrate their victories with the rest of the country."

Mitcham War Memorial and doorstep interviews with the elderly

Your Local Guardian:

Merton MP, Siobhain McDonagh, celebrated alongside the chair of Mitcham's British Legion, Alan Barley, by laying wreaths whilst listening to the sounds of bagpipes play.

Siobhain McDonagh also documented several residents reflecting on their lives during the war by talking to them from a distance outside their doorsteps.

Siobhain said: "It was incredible to see that people turned up to the war memorial in the hopes that something was happening, there was no publicity.

"I just wanted to give voice to some of our wonderful residents about their personal view and memories of the VE day."
