Police are seeking two men thought to be behind the apparent theft and crashing of a car in Purley on Tuesday morning (May 5).
Images circulated on social media Tuesday of the scene on Brighton Road in Purley in the early hours of Tuesday morning, with debris from the crash littering the busy A road.
Responding to a request from the Croydon Guardian, police confirmed they had arrested one man in the wake of the crash but had since released him.
The car in question had crashed into "roadside furniture" they said:
"Police were called to Smitham Downs Road in Purley at 03:15hrs on Monday, 4 May to a report of a burglary and a stolen car.
"Shortly after officers came across a vehicle on Brighton Road that had been in a collision with roadside furniture.
"No other vehicles were involved.
"Officers arrested one man nearby on suspicion of burglary.
"He was subsequently released with no further action."
The spokesperson added that two men thought to be behind the apparent burglary are still being hunted by police:
"Two men were believed to be involved in the incident and remain outstanding.
"Enquiries continue to trace them."
