A Selsdon school with a close connection to a coronavirus patient will remain open, at least for the time being.

In a letter sent by Quest Academy Selsdon head teacher Andy Crofts to parents - which has been seen by the Croydon Guardian - he says that they have been notified of a single case of coronavirus from the school community.

"This person hasn’t been in school at all this week and the building has been cleaned thoroughly several times since they were last in school," the letter read.

"Public Health England (PHE) have told us the following: 'PHE’s current advice for schools in London is that staff and pupils should monitor themselves for symptoms and self-isolate if they experience symptoms. People who do not have symptoms are advised to carry on as normal and do not need to self-isolate.'

"I realise this will be an anxious time for families. Our approach to this matter is always made on the basis of the latest professional and medical advice and we are monitoring the situation closely, but at present we will remain fully open in accordance with what we have been told so far."

News broke on Monday regarding the first confirmed case of the illness in the borough.

A Croydon Council spokesman echoed the sentiment that the local authority was working with health colleagues in support of PHE.

The letter from Quest Academy continued: "Everyone should be mindful of the general advice to prevent the spread of infection, most importantly: washing hands regularly and catching coughs and sneezes in a tissue and binning it.

"Anyone who develops symptoms should call NHS 111 and follow their advice. Anyone with specific medical conditions that may make them more vulnerable to the effects of a respiratory infection should be especially vigilant.

"We will keep you updated if there is any change in the situation."
