The newly appointed Superintendent for Partnership and Neighbourhood Policing in Croydon has said there is "no wider risk to the public" following Monday's murder.

The victim has since been named as 16-year-old Louis Johnson and British Transport Police has opened a murder investigation.

Less that two hours after the incident, the council leader Tony Newman said his thoughts are with the teenager’s family.

Councillor Newman said: “All our thoughts are with the loved ones of a young person who has sadly and tragically lost their life in our borough tonight.”

While cabinet member for safer communities Councillor Hamida Ali described the incident as a “shocking loss of young life”.

She added: “We remain resolute to stop this kind of violence in our borough.”

Croydon Central MP Sarah Jones who also chairs the All Party Parliamentary Group on Knife Crime said she was heartbroken by the news.

Ms Jones said: “Our first thoughts are with the family and friends who are facing what nobody ever should. I pay tribute to the work of the emergency services and station staff for their efforts.

“This brutal loss of a young life is another reminder that tackling violence must be our highest priority at every level of government and across our communities. I will not stop campaigning on this until our children are safe on our streets.”

On Tuesday afternoon Superintendent Andy Brittain - who also covers Sutton and Bromley in his role - put out a statement to reassure residents.

"Just met with Sarah Jones, senior leaders from Croydon Council and partners in relation to murder at East Croydon," he said.

"BTP are leading the investigation and it is progressing at a pace.

"No wider risk to the public. Additional police patrols taking place in key areas."

Police were first called to the station at 4.45pm and Louis died at the scene a short while later.

He had entered East Croydon station via the Ruskin Square ticket barrier at 4.30pm.

While he was on the overbridge inside the station, Louis met the attacker, who pulled out a knife and stabbed him.

A post mortem examination will take place in the coming days.
