A man was arrested on suspicion of various offences after a pedestrian died at a road junction in Whyteleafe on Thursday (January 9).

Surrey Police said yesterday (January 12) that a 25-year-old man had been arrested after his vehicle was traced by officers investigating the fatality.

"Officers have today located the vehicle that we were seeking after a pedestrian died on the A22 at Whyteleafe on Thursday night (9 January) and a 25 year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, failing to stop at the scene of a collision and failing to report a collision," a spokesperson for Surrey Police said.

"He has since been released under investigation and we continue to seek witnesses to help us complete our investigation," they added.

The incident thought to have caused the pedestrian's death took place around 10pm on Thursday, near the junction between the A22 Godstone Road at the junction with Hillside Road.

A 30 year-old man from Warlingham was pronounced dead at the scene. His family has been informed, police said.

Following the arrest police continue to investigate what happened.
