Work is underway for Southmere Village Library on the south side of the lake in Thamesmead.
Housing association Peabody will deliver the library as part of the regeneration of Thamesmead.
The regeneration will contribute to the ‘cultural, physical, social and environmental wellbeing of Thamesmead.’
A spokesperson from Peabody said:
“The library and community building will play an important part in our regeneration of South Thamesmead and will provide a focal point for community activity.”
The new library will be placed on the ground floor and is to be run by Bexley Council Library services.
The Mezzanine and first floor will be managed by the Peabody Community Foundation team and will provide a flexible space to support employment and skills training.
Back in 2017, An international competition was held to design the new library which was won by architecture studio Bisset Adams.
The building is currently under construction using a hybrid timber and steel frame.
It is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
Bexley Library Services will then take occupation to conclude their fit-out aiming to open the facility in Summer 2021.
