A landslip closed train lines through Epsom station on Sunday (December 15), exacerbating disruption for passengers during a month-long strike by South Western Railway (SWR) workers.

A spokesperson for the rail operators said that “all lines” running through Epsom would be down until Tuesday, with Monday’s entire service in the area already allotted for the significant clean-up operation.

The landslip happened between Epsom and Ewell West stations early on Sunday.

SWR offered the following statement regarding the present disruption:

“Due to a landslip between Epsom and Ewell West all lines are blocked.

“Train services running through these stations will be revised. Disruption is expected until the end of the day on 16/12/2019.

“Engineers on site are working to rectify the issue, however due to the complicated nature of the repairs, lines will not be open tomorrow, 16/12.

“This means that trains booked to run between London Waterloo and Epsom will terminate / restart from Ewell West. The buses already booked to run between Effingham Junction and Epsom will extend and run to / from Ewell West.”

To help passengers complete their journeys, SWR added that tickets would be accepted “at no extra cost” on the following lines and bus routes:

  • Southern services between Epsom and London Victoria
  • TfL Buses between Surrey and London Waterloo

SWR workers represented by the RMT transport workers’ union are currently in the middle of a 27-day strike over a dispute with SWR about guards on trains and the safety of train drivers.
