The Mitcham and Morden constituency was created in 1974 and is one of two in the borough of Merton.

Since 1997 it has been represented by Labour’s Siobhain McDonagh.

For the 15 years before that it was a Conservative seat.

It covers the Merton Council wards of Colliers Wood, Figges Marsh, Graveney, Lavender, Longthornton, Lower Morden, Cricket Green, Pollards Hill, Ravensbury, and St Helier.

Overall Merton voted to remain in the EU. In Mitcham and Morden 55.31 per cent of residents voted to remain.

This year there are six candidates who hope to represent the constituency.

Des Coke – Christian People’s Alliance

Des stood in a 2016 by-election in Tooting where he came sixth with 164 votes.

The Christian People’s Alliance was founded in 1999 and describes itself as “the only party to stand for the unborn child”.

The party also supports leaving the EU immediately, arguing that no deal would be preferable to Theresa May’s withdrawal agreement – It says it would support a second referendum but not until five years after the UK has left.

Jeremy Maddocks – Brexit Party

Jeremy has lived in  South London for 25 years and is a long-standing opponent of Britain’s membership of the EU.

He said: “Brexit offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Britain to embrace international free trade across the globe. We will become wealthier, freer and self-governing, again.

“Knife crime, drugs and assault have reached unacceptable levels in our local community and we need real and proactive action from our elected representatives.”

Pippa was a secondary school teacher for 13 years and a university tutor while completing a doctorate. She is now a caseworker for a deaf and disabled people’s organisation, and helps to care for her father.

Earlier this year Pippa petitioned Merton Council to declare a climate emergency and now sits on a Climate Emergency Working Group.

She said: “I joined the Green Party because I agree with its priorities, including action on climate breakdown and the biodiversity crisis, improved public services, truly affordable housing for owners and renters alike, electoral reform, and a People’s Vote.”

Siobhain McDonagh – Labour

She became a councillor in Merton aged 22 in 1982 and was first elected to represent Mitcham and Morden in 1997.
