A 50-year-old woman has been struck by a tram near Phipps Bridge, causing delays for passengers.

Tramlink general manager Roger Harding said the person had been hit about 4.30pm.

He said the person was reported to be able to walk but crash investigators have yet to decide whether the track could be reopened.

Trams are running either side of the stop but delays are expected.

"We've had an incident near Phipps Bridge of a passenger being struck," Mr Harding said.

"We think the person is able to walk but in these sorts of circumstances we have to report in the incident to the rail accident investigating branch."

Mr Harding said the tram operator was still waiting to hear whether investigators would be attending the scene of the accident. Until then, the track will remain closed.

A London Ambulance Service spokeswoman said a fast response car and an ambulance were sent to Phipps Bridge at 4.12pm.

She said they found an injured 50-year-old woman.

The spokeswoman said the woman was taken to St George's Hospital, Tooting but the extent of her injuries remain unknown.

Beverley Kassem, Press Officer for Merton Police said: "There has been an accident at Phipps Bridge involving a passenger and a tram. Mitcham police and the London Ambulence Service have both been called."
