Traffic came to a standstill in central Croydon following a serious road accident involving a motorcyclist, near to Croydon's law courts.

A biker was seen being lifted into an ambulance on a stretcher just after 2pm following the accident on Barclay Road, near to the junctions of Addiscombe Grove and Altyre Road, in central Croydon.

Traffic in the surrounding area ground to a halt while police blocked off a section of the road.

An eye witness said: "I saw the guy lying on the ground, surrounded by paramedics and police.

"There was a defibrillator on the ground next to him. The bollard was lying on its side in the middle of the road and it was crushed.

"It was so sad, his clothes were just lying in the road. He didn't look too good so I said a little prayer for him.

"There were so many police there - two police vans, one 4x4, one rapid response vehicle and police cars at either side of the road."

It is unclear how serious the biker's injuries are at this stage.
