The water watchdog in England and Wales has found a 30 per cent rise in complaints against water companies in the past year.

More than 240,000 complaints were made during the financial year of 2006-07 with incorrect bills top of the list.

Among the total complaints were 56,914 aimed at Thames Water, 14,059 for Southern Water and a relatively low 379 for Sutton and East Surrey Water.

More than 24,000 Thames Water users complained the company got their bills wrong along with 14,059 from Southern.

Sutton and East Surrey had 320 customers complaining about their bills and another 46 about their water service. While the numbers might be low for Sutton and East Surrey, they are double the previous year's numbers.

Watchdog the Consumer Council for Water said water customers were paying more so wanted better service.

They also wanted complaints correctly dealt with the first time they make contact with their water suppliers.
