It took more than a decade to get a post office back in Belmont, but less than two years after re-opening it will close once more.

In April last year, residents of the south Sutton village celebrated as the post was brought back to town, taking up residence in Station Road's Pet Stop.

But due to poor health the store's owner Lisa Kear will be closing the shop for good on November 9.

"This is due to health reasons and me needing a big back operation with a very long recovery time," she said.

"The pet shop opened five years ago with the post office opening nearly two years ago.

"The community and myself fought very hard to get the post office back in Belmont and I’m extremely sad to be leaving."

But there is still hope that a post office in Belmont will live on.

"The aim is for the post office to stay in Belmont moved to new premises hopefully Belmont Food and Wines," Lisa added.

"I ask for the community to support this as much as they supported me.

"I have made many friends in Belmont and will be extremely sad when I close the door.

"The residents of Belmont are great and so supportive and I’m so great full I've had the opportunity to be a part of it.

"From the bottom of my heart I would like to thank each and everyone of my customers that have supported me."

Since 1890, four different sites have played host to a post office in town.

The most recent closure before this came in 2005, which broke a century-long streak.

Lisa said that people are free to come to the store and say their goodbyes and she even promised to "try not to cry."
