A decision on a new cancer centre is set to be made by Sutton Council next week.

The council’s planning committee will hear plans from the Royal Marsden for a new Oak Cancer Centre.

It is part of plans for the London Cancer Hub – a partnership between Sutton Council and the Institute of Cancer Research which will take 20 years to complete.

The multi-million pound cancer research centre will be built in Belmont, with the first phase expected to be complete by 2022.

The latest plans have received 115 public comments in support.

And the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust hopes to create a state-of-the-art rapid diagnostic centre within the new Oak Cancer Centre.

It would also include phlebotomy – the blood testing department, a day care unit for patients to receive chemotherapy and a research centre.

To make way for the new building, the existing Orchard House will be demolished as well as some sheds and garages would be demolished.

A statement on the planning application reads: “The new Oak Cancer Centre will allow the trust to treat the growing numbers of people diagnosed with cancer every year and will set them up to help people with cancer for decades to come.

“Not only providing world class care and treatment, but doing so in modern welcoming facilities that give patients and their families more space.”

Sutton Council’s planning committee will meet at the civic offices in St Nicholas Way at 7.30pm on Wednesday, November 6.
