The latest report into a school that was rated ‘inadequate’ by Ofsted has revealed it is now making progress.

Ofsted inspectors in March said Al-Khair School had been unlawfully segregating boys and girls, which was in breach of the Equality Act.

But this September the private Muslim school split into three separate schools: Al-Khair Boys’ School, Al-Khair Girls’ School and Al-Khair Preparatory School.

In an updated report published this month, inspectors said they are satisfied that Al Khair Boys Secondary school is meeting the criteria and that there are opportunities for boys to to take part in joint events with pupils from the newly formed girls’ school.

Inspectors also found that the school has worked to improve safeguarding training.

It was previously found that steps to vet the suitability of visitors had not been undertaken.

An inspection in January also found that leaders at the school did not follow statutory guidance on the safe recruitment of staff.

This meant that pre-employment checks on new staff were not taking place. But this has now been introduced.

Inspectors said: “They make additional checks beyond the statutory requirements. Processes to review the suitability of staff, including supply staff, are thorough and fit for purpose.”
