Whitstable Town 1 Molesey 1

Molesey players were on the floor following the game against Whitstable Town this past Saturday. Several players saying things like: "How did we not win that?"

And neither the management nor the supporters could really claim to have an answer to these musings.

The long trip to Kent was met with a sunny, yet breezy day which left temperatures going up and down for most of the match.

The match kicked off to plenty of cheers from the quite ample home supporters, however these cheers quickly turned to jeers as after just two minutes Molesey were awarded a penalty, Julian Phillips being judged to have been cut down in the area.

However, there was quite a delay between the foul and the kick being taken, this seemed to unsettle Luke Edghill who had stepped up and he cannoned his penalty off of the crossbar.

The game started very evenly, with both sides exchanging possesion, but there was very little in the way of goal mouth action.

In the 31st minute, Jon Neal had a shot deflected that forced Molesey keeper Jon Ashwood into an excellant reaction save.

There was little other action until the 41st minute, when Grant Keywood picked up the ball just outside the box and drove past a few tackles, and fired a determined shot into the bottom left-hand corner of the Whitstable goal sending the away support into raptures.

The second half began the same way the first half did, very scappy football meant that again there was little in the way of shots on goal.

Molesey then took the game by the scruff of the neck after an hour and started dominating, looking for a goal that would put the game to bed.

Julian Phillips had a close range volley saved, when he looked certain to score and, then 10 minutes later, the same player managed to break through the Whitstable backline, but his one-on-one effort was saved.

The Moles then made two changes with just injury time remaining; Luke Edghill and Grant Keywood, both had run themselves into the ground and were replaced by Paul Cross and Steve Lang.

Molesey were then put under a lot of pressure as Whitstable searched for an equaliser.

The game had gone into its 96th minute before Whitstable broke through.

A high free-kick was flighted in and Steven Lloyd headed the ball past Ashwood before the Moles number one was able to react.

The referee added one final minute but in the end both sides had to be happy with a point, however much one team may have deserved more.
