A 40-year-old man has died at Wandsworth Prison after he was found hanged in his cell yesterday.
Rabih Al-Ghaiwi, who was serving an indeterminate public protection sentence for firearms offence, was treated by paramedics at the scene but pronounced dead at 7.40am.
A spokesman for the prison service said: "Any death in custody is a tragedy, and our thoughts are with the family of Mr Al-Ghiawi at this time. As with all deaths in custody, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will conduct an investigation."
Wandsworth Prison is the largest jail in south-west London and currently able to hold 1416 prisoners.
