Police have said that an alleged rapist and his victim were known to each other.

Officers are investigating an allegation of rape in Wandle Park, which was reported to officers at approximately 5.15am on October 16.

The victim – a woman – is being supported by specially trained officers.

A 40-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of rape; he was taken to a southwest London police station and has been bailed to a date in mid-November pending further enquiries.

Police have now revealed that both parties are known to each other.

A spokesman for the Met said: "We are aware of concerns from local residents and officers from the Safer Neighbourhoods Team will be patrolling the area.

"Please speak to them if you have any concerns or contact them via 101."
