Croydon star Luol Deng has announced his retirement from the NBA.
Born in Sudan, Deng moved to the UK at an early age and was educated at St. Mary's RC High School, a voluntary aided state comprehensive school in Croydon.
He also represented Croydon at the London Youth Games, and was inducted into their Hall of Fame.
The 34-year-old signed a symbolic contract with the Chicago Bulls to allow him to retire as a member of the team where he played the majority of his career after being drafted as the seventh overall pick in 2004.
The Bulls' executive vice president of basketball operations, John Paxson, told NBA.com: "From the moment we made Luol Deng the seventh overall pick of the 2004 NBA Draft, the Chicago Bulls became a better team.
"We'll always remember his All-Star career and the fierce competitiveness he brought."
Deng retires as the Bulls' fourth-leading scorer of all time with 10,286 points and also ranks in the franchise's top 10 for a host of offensive and defensive statistics.
He led them in scoring in both the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons and was selected to the league's All-Star team on both occasions.
