A teacher from Richmond is set to star in a new national social media campaign that is aimed at encouraging more people to consider teaching.

Science Teacher - Shaakirah Obi of Christ's School, will feature in one of seven films that are part of the national ‘Get Into Teaching’ campaign which seeks to highlight how teaching can engage, support and inspire the next generation.

Ms Obi – who began her teaching career in 2016, features in a short film showcasing the positive influence that she has left on pupils by using her individual skills, knowledge and experience.

When asked about how she became a teacher and being selected to be in the campaign, Ms Obi said: “Having worked with children from a young age, I always knew I wanted to teach.

“The fact that I am able to impact so many young lives, pass on knowledge and simply be helpful and add to society in a positive way, makes the job so worthwhile.

“I received an email at the beginning of the summer holidays about the opportunity to feature in the new Get Into Teaching campaign.

“The casting team were particularly interested in science teachers with a chemistry background along with teachers from other subjects.

“I was super keen to get involved and apply as soon as I finished reading that email and so I did.

“After being successful with my application, I had the amazing opportunity to be involved in this campaign to help encourage others to choose teaching as a career.”

The new films will be run across the campaign’s social media channels including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest and Snapchat.

The first video was launched in the same week as World Teacher’s Day which was held on October 5th to celebrate the efforts that teachers make to education as well as the development of children and young people.

Roger Pope, spokesperson for the Get Into Teaching campaign and a National Leader or Education, said: “Great teachers can help shape the lives of students daily.

“We hope that our new social media films will convey the many rewards that a career in teaching can bring, for anyone who is passionate about inspiring the next generation.

“I would encourage anyone looking for a rewarding and purpose-led career to explore teaching as an option by visiting the Get Into Teaching website and registering their interest.”
