The strike partnership of the fit-again Mark Peters and converted centre-half Will Jenkins has convinced Walton & Hersham that they can stay on course for promotion without having to sign a new forward.

Superb displays by this pair and a man-of-the-match performance from midfielder Rob George brought Walton their biggest Ryman League win of the season on Saturday when they beat visitors Eastbourne Town 4-1 with goals from Dan Nwanze, Peters, Adam Moriarty and George.

Assistant manager Jimmy Bolton said: "Peters was making his first start since recovering from a broken collarbone and he has given us a real boost. He and Will Jenkins, who is normally a defender, played well together up front and we have two other options in Richard Thompson and our top scorer Rob George, who can also play as a striker.

"So, although we were looking for a striker, that is no longer a priority, although we are always anxious to strengthen the side."

Walton are now in the play-off positions, having moved up to fifth place, with two or three games in hand over the teams above them.

Bolton acknowleged: "We are in good shape and have done better than we expected. We have built a brand new team, with only two or three players from last season still here. We knew it would take a few games for the lads to gel, but we have been winning along the way.

"Automatic promotion is our goal and, although that is a tough ask, it is not beyond us. We should continue to improve so we feel we will be strong enough."

Walton, who were away to Whyteleafe on Tuesday, visit Worthing in the FA Trophy this Saturday.

They now have only three men out injured - broken ankle victims Louis Clarke and Dolando Smith and Jay Richardson, who has returned to training following a cartilage operation.
