A flood warning has been issued for areas surrounded by the River Wandle as heavy rain hits the area.

A post on the River Levels UK website posted the warning earlier today and said, Wandsworth, Merton, Croydon, Sutton and Lambeth are all impacted.

"River levels are forecast to rise as a result of persistent heavy rainfall today," it read.

"Flooding could happen throughout the day.

"Isolated heavy rainfall may cause high levels at any point up to midnight Tuesday night.

"Flooding to areas nearest the river is possible, particularly low-lying land, roads and gardens.

"There is uncertainty in the rainfall forecast, not all areas will see the heaviest rain, flooding is only expected to affect the areas that do see heavy showers."

It added that the unsettled forecast could leave higher than normal river levels.

"Any flooding experienced is expected to be short lasting," it continued.

"We are closely monitoring the situation and will issue Flood Warnings if required. Our staff are checking our defences and structures.

"Please avoid contact with flood water and remain safe in locations near rivers."
