Drivers in Richmond have paid more than two million pounds in fines at yellow box junctions in the borough since 2016.

At the junction between Castelnau with Trinity Church Road almost 7,000 penalty charge notices were issued in 2018, raking in nearly half a million for the council.

But drivers soon became wary of this junction, and just 959 fines have been issued here this year.

So far in 2019, the big earner has been at Upper Sunbury Road Junction with Lower Sunbury Road, resulting in 4,941 penalty charge notices worth £275,000.

Drivers are fined £130 for wrongly entering a yellow box junction, but this is reduced to £65 if they pay it within 14 days.

A spokesperson from Richmond Council said:

“Yellow box junctions are installed on the highway to ensure the safety of all road users.

“The purpose of a yellow box junction is defined in the Highway Code and all road users should understand its usage as part of passing their driving test.

“Drivers who do not follow the Highway Code and enter the yellow box when the exit road or lane is not clear will cause an obstruction to other vehicles and therefore if caught will be fined.”
