Penge West and Anerley stations were unable to run trains towards London Bridge, while London Overground services were suspended Monday morning between Sydenham and West Croydon.
A spokesperson for the rail operators said:
"A tree has fallen on the railway line at Penge West. Consequently, trains between Sydenham and East Croydon / West Croydon may be cancelled, delayed or diverted.
"We anticipate that disruption will continue until 11am."
Around 7am, a spokesperson offered further details of services disrupted by the fallen tree and suggested alternative routes rail users could use to complete their journeys.
"The driver of the 04:12 Brighton to Bedford service reported that a tree had fallen on the line at Penge West.
"Specialist engineers from Network Rail are now on site. Several trains have experienced damage when passing the tree, so unfortunately they have had to be taken out of use.
"Southern and Thameslink services are currently unable to serve Anerley and Penge West with trains towards London Bridge.
"If you are travelling from these stations, you will need to take a southbound train to Norwood Junction and change there for an alternative service.
"Northbound Thameslink services from East Croydon are currently unable to call at London Bridge.
"We recommend that you check customer information screens and journey planners prior to travelling this morning, as these will have all the latest service information."
