Men between 30 and 60 with a body mass index (BMI) of twenty-five plus are being encouraged to join Richmond’s new fitness program.

The Council have teamed up with Teddington Sports and Fitness Centre to launch a 12-week program to help promote healthy living in the borough.

The program follows the success of a trial that involved around 20 men who attended a one-day-per weekly session per week at Hampton Sports and Fitness Centre – where they received healthy eating advice through workshops as well as having indoor and outdoor group training sessions.

Steve from Twickenham – who was also one of the first to sign up said: "After completing this programme, I feel a lot better being lighter and more agile, and I actually enjoy exercise now.

"The best part of the programme was the other participants and the coaches; everyone helped everyone else and the coaches had good tips on a better diet and how to exercise."

Steve and the other men in his group collectively lost half a stone and were given a one-month free membership to Richmond’s ‘Feel Good Fitness’ programme.

Cllr Piers Allen, Chair of the Adult Social Services, Health and Housing Committee, said: “Nationally, six out of ten men are considered overweight.

"This programme is a great opportunity for men who are looking to shed the pounds and get fitter and healthier to work with the support of qualified trainers.

"Twice a week, men will come together and have fun, either playing team sports or learning about sensible dietary and lifestyle choices. And it is affordable.

"I encourage any man eligible to consider signing up. As Steve has shown us, the programme works."

The ‘Move it to Lose it’ programme launches from October 2, and October 3.

The programme starts from just five pounds a week and will consist of two separate sessions which will be on Wednesday from 7:30pm to 9:30pm and on Thursday’s from 7pm to 9pm.
