Less than a year after they began driving around Wimbledon selling tasty treats out of a van, a pair of friends could be recognised as having the best waffles in Europe.

Julia Jefferis and James Timmins began their 'Utter Waffles' business in January this year, despite naysayers telling them it wasn't viable.

"We’ve been told along the way that it isn’t a concept that will work, but have pursued as we believe in it," James said.

They were then among 4,000 vendors nominated for the British Street Food Awards and one of about 64 that were selected to compete in one of four heats.

Things didn't go their way though and they didn't make it through the heat in May.

But not all hope was lost.

"We were selected as a wildcard for the final, and thus last weekend, headed to Hawker House to battle it out for seven awards," James added.

"We had little expectations when going in to the finals, particularly with the result of the heat in Portsmouth, but the sun was shining, and sales seemed to be going well. We were absolutely flat out."

But what were these waffles that attracted so much attention you might ask? James told us that as well:

  • Wanna Pizza Me? - A pepperoni, chorizo and mozzarella stuffed waffle, topped with parmesan cheese, rocket and spicy honey.
  • A Waffle a Day Keeps the Doctor Away - A fresh waffle, topped with cinnamon apple, homemade Biscoff cream, Biscoff crumb, salted caramel and fudge

Overall the pair managed to take out three of the 7 awards up for grabs, including the People's Choice Award.

"This is the big one," James added.

"Every customer that walked through the door of Hawker House was given a voting card, and could try as much food as possible, and vote for who they liked the most.

"We won this and it is widely seen as the biggest deal of all the awards."

So, what happens from here?

"Now we are desperately trying to organise our trip to Malmo, Sweden to represent The UK in The European Street Food Awards," James said.

"We will leave on September 26 to compete over the weekend of 28th and 29th. Hoping to bring the trophy back home."
