Croydon victims of the Windrush scandal can find out how they can claim compensation at a public event in Thornton Heath this weekend.
In 2018 it was revealed that thousands of pre-1973 Caribbean immigrants had been wrongly detained, denied legal rights and threatened with deportation, some losing their jobs.
Members of the Windrush Taskforce, set up to inform victims of the Home Office's compensation scheme, will be on hand to to answer any questions attendees may have alongside community charities.
One such charity is Croydon African Caribbean Family Organisation (CACFO) UK which is chaired by Councillor Callton Young, who is working with Windrush Action to secure fair and just compensation for Windrush victims.
Councillor Young said: “Hosting the Home Office event in Thornton Heath ward is particularly important because the area is home to the largest number of West Indians of any ward in London and therefore, potential interest in the Windrush Compensation Scheme is likely to be high.”
Taking place on Saturday at 40 Northwood Road between 11am and 1pm, the session will provide information on who may be eligible for compensation, what kind of impacts and losses are covered by the scheme and how to apply.
