Calls have been made to improve safety around Wandle Park after a woman was raped on Sunday.

The attack took place at about 4am and police are yet to make any arrests.

But this isn't the first attack to take place at the Colliers Wood spot.

In the past four years, three separate attacks have been reported by the Wimbledon Times, one in 2016, one in 2018 and the most recent one on August 11.

But in a shocking revelation, police have revealed that just one arrest was ever made for the 2016 attack, for which the person was later released with no further action. On top of that, no arrests have ever been made in relation to the 2018 and 2019 attacks.

This angered Colliers Wood woman Adele Angel who has lived in the area for the past 24 years.

She runs a women's walking group and says more needs to be done to protect those using the park.

"I felt sickened," she said upon hearing of the most recent attack.

"I also have 27-year-old and 19-year-old daughters.

"It’s horrible to hear of these things happening.

"The lighting needs to be addressed on Dennison Road as it’s so poor."

Those sentiments were echoed by Merton's Conservative leader Nick McLean.

"Clearly, it is terrible to hear that another assault has taken place," he said.

"My thoughts and those of my colleagues are with the victim. I hope that this case can lead to charge and conviction.

"We have in the past requested improved street lighting in the borough where needed and we will now focus on improving the street lighting in Dennison Road as a priority."

All three attacks took place between 11pm and 4am.

Merton Council has since been asked what safety measures have been implemented over the past few years at the park, and what, if any, new measures would it look into in the future.

The council's cabinet member for community safety, Edith Macauley MBE, said: “We are reviewing safety in Wandle Park following this terrible incident.

"We work closely with the police to ensure the safety of people in our parks.

"Merton is the fourth safest London borough and incidents like this are very rare. We urge everyone to remain aware of their surroundings when they are out and about, stick to busy paths and avoid shortcuts in dark or lonely places.”
