The TK Maxx store in Whitehorse Road, Selhurst, is set to close this month.

It will close on August 15 and there are plans to replace the discount store with a Lidl.

The supermarket wants the new shop to trade from 8am to 8pm from Monday to Saturday and from 9am to 6pm on Sundays.

This is a two-hour extension on weekdays from current opeing hours and the shop has applied to Croydon Council for this.

An application states that the average household income in Selhurst, where the new shop would be, is lower than the rest of Croydon.

It adds: “These statistics are relevant as Lidl is a limited assortment discount  retailer and is characterised by the limited number of product lines which it sells at noticeably lower prices, unlike the ‘big four’ supermarket operators (Tesco, Asda, Morrisons and Sainsbury’s).

“Household incomes in Selhurst have been, and probably still are, lower than the rest of the borough; hence, improved access to convenience goods at discounted prices during evening hours will be of a clear benefit to the local

community which the Lidl store will serve.”

TK Maxx will close for good on August 15 and the closest store will then be the one in Purley Way.

Lidl UK’s regional head of property, Henry Neel, said: “We are delighted to announce that we’ve submitted a planning application for a new store on Whitehorse Road, which marks another milestone in our ambitious store expansion programme.

“If granted, this would mark a multi-million pound investment in the area and the creation of new jobs when the store opens. We look forward to receiving a decision in due course.”

The company has also put a planning application in to change the look of the current store.

This includes a metallic finish on the building and new doors.

A decision on the plans is expected to be made later this month.
