People from Croydon will have the chance to be immortalised in a mosaic at the revamped Fairfield Halls.

Dame Judi Dench will formally reopen the Ashcroft Playhouse, previously known as the Ashcroft Theatre, on September 16.

She will unveil a commemorative mosaic of Dame Peggy Ashcroft, who originally opened what was the Ashcroft Theatre on November 5, 1962.

It will be made up of photos of hundreds of Croydon residents, you can submit your photos here – https://thepeoplespicture.com/girldonegood/

Dame Judi will take part in a question and answer session which will kick off a week-long series of events celebrating the reopening of Fairfield Halls after a revamp costing more than £40 million.

The Park Lane venue closed to the public back in July 2016 and after a few delays it will reopen next month.

Dame Judi was last at Fairfield Halls in June 1993 when she unveiled a display commemorating her friend Croydon-born actress Dame Peggy Ascroft’s life.

At the event on September 16 she will take part in a question and answer session hosted by broadcaster John Hannam about fellow actress Dame Peggy.

She will be joined by theatre critic Michael Billington OBE.

Dame Judi said: “I’m delighted to be returning to Croydon’s Fairfield Halls to celebrate the life and career of my dear friend Peggy Ashcroft, and I’m thrilled to reopen the Ashcroft Playhouse in her honour. I hope new generations visiting the venue will discover her legacy and be inspired by it.”

It will take place in front of a specially-invited audience of students studying GCSE and A-Level drama courses, but a limited number of tickets will be available for members of the public to purchase from Friday, August 9.

Croydon Council leader, Councillor Tony Newman, said: “The reopening of Fairfield Halls will be a momentous occasion for Croydon and I am delighted Dame Judi Dench is coming back to Fairfield Halls to unveil the new Ashcroft Playhouse.

“We’re proud Fairfield Halls’ cultural offer will reflect Croydon’s diversity and we are determined to ensure this fantastic venue offers something for everyone.”
