Gas works are set to take over a major part Wallington until the middle of December.

SGN sent out a letter to residents advising them that from August 19, the area surrounding London Road will be undergoing the upgrade.

"We’re investing to replace our old metal gas mains with new plastic pipe to ensure a continued safe and reliable supply of gas into the future," the letter read.

"So that we can minimise disruption, we have carefully consisted and planned our work in partnership with Sutton Council.

"We have agreed to start our project on Monday, August 19 and last approximately 17 weeks. We will complete our work in three overlapping phases."

The works are being broken down into three phases.

The first phase will take place in London Road between the junctions of Riverside Close and Kilburns Mill Close. The letter from SGN advised the below roads would be affected.

  • We will begin out project on London Road between the junctions of Riverside Close and Bowmans Meadow on August 19
  • The Grange will remain open as normal throughout this phase, however we will need to close the southern entrance to their property when we are working between the junctions of Riverside Close and Bowmans Meadow
  • We will progress along London Road in six sections up to the junction of Kilburns Mill Close
  • To ensure everyone’s safety we need install temporary multi-way traffic lights around our work area, these will move with us as we progress
  • We will need to temporarily suspend all bus stops that fall within out work area
  • We expect this phase to last approximately six weeks

The second phase will take place on Wandle Road between the junction of Elmwood Close and Birchwood Road. Once again, the letter outlined the affected areas

  • From September 23 our engineers will begin work on Wandle Road between the junctions of Elmwood Close and Birchwood Road
  • We will be working in the eastern footway between these junctions
  • Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout, along with access to Herald Gardens for motorists and pedestrians
  • We may need to suspend some parking around our work area
  • We expect this phase to last approximately two weeks

The final phase, which is expected to last until the week before Christmas, will take place over the entire length of Elmwood Close.

From October 7 out engineers will begin work on Elmwood Close

  • To ensure everyone’s safety we need to temporarily close Elmwood Close at its junction with London Road to motorists
  • A signed diversion will be in place via Wandle Road and park Road
  • For everyone’s safety and to maintain traffic flow we need to suspend all parking on the south side of Park Road between its junctions with London Road Wandle, and also on the west side of Wandle Road between London Road and Park Road
  • Access will be maintained for all residents
  • We expect this phase to last approximately 10 weeks

SGN added that the engineers will be working Monday - Friday between 8am and 4pm and "if required" Saturday and Sunday between 8am and 1pm for reinstatement.

"We understand that people can get frustrated by roadworks," the letter read.

"However, the new plastic pipe has a minimum lifespan of 80 years.

"This means that when the work is complete, Wallington businesses and residents will continue to enjoy the benefits of a safe and reliable gas supply for years to come."
