Surrey Police are hunting a group of migrants who were seen leaving a lorry in Chertsey this afternoon (July 16).

Police said Tuesday afternoon they had responded to calls that a group of "clandestine migrants" had been spotted leaving a lorry on St Peter's Way in Chertsey.

At around 3pm, a spokesperson said several members of the group had already been detained, while the search for the others remained ongoing.

Officers from the Runnymede section of Surrey Police were helped in the search by a specialist dog unit (pictured).

Describing the incident, a spokesperson for Surrey Police said:

"We were called earlier this afternoon (16 July), following reports of a group of clandestine migrants in St Peter’s Way in Chertsey.

"We received reports around 1.50pm that a lorry, believed to have come from the M3, had pulled over in a lay-by to let them out before driving off towards the M25.

"A number of the clandestine migrants have been located and the search remains ongoing.

"Enquiries are also underway to locate the lorry.

"Anyone who witnessed the incident, or with any information, is asked to contact us on 101, quoting incident reference PR/P19160649."

Meanwhile, Runnymede Police Twitter revealed that it was PD Kiwi, a specially trained police dog, was directly responsible for helping locate five of the fugitive migrants.

"We have various units searching for persons seen a short while ago getting out of a foreign registered artic lorry on St Peters Way Chertsey.

"PD Kiwi (@sspoldogsection) has already rounded up five and is currently breathing down my neck with satisfaction as I share this," a spokesperson for Runnymede Police said.
