Teenagers recovering from brain injuries in Tadworth took to the tennis courts after being inspired by 15-year-old prodigy Cori 'Coco' Gauff at Wimbledon.

The specially adapted tennis session was held at the Children's Trust in Tadworth last week (July 11).

The young people who took part are all undergoing intensive rehabilitation after suffering severe brain injuries as a result of accident or illness.

Their inspiration came courtesy of perhaps the most remarkable story to emerge from this year's Wimbledon Championships — the tennis of 15-year-old wild card entrant Cori 'Coco' Gauff from the United States, who defeated former champion Venus Williams on an incredible run into the tournament's latter stages.

"It’s amazing for the children to see teens like Coco succeed. She’s a brilliant inspiration and we hope the tennis session motivates the children in their rehabilitation," said Sharon Tuppeny, head of Therapy Rehabilitation at The Children’s Trust.

"Brain injury can be devastating for a child – it can mean they’re unable to stand, walk, or even hold their head up.

"It is important that children have fun and are engaged with their rehabilitation, as it will help them make the most progress in their recovery," she added.

Her words were echoed by the kids themselves.

16-year-old Jake, who is staying at The Children’s Trust after a brain tumour, commented: "It was great fun to play with my friends and get in the Wimbledon spirit.

"I’m really looking forward to taking part in more sessions like this."

The Children’s Trust has launched ‘Tiny Massive Moments’, a campaign to show how public donations help ensure rehabilitation is fun so that children make the most progress.
