A pub in Croydon which closed down in 2016 could soon be turned into flats.

Plans have been submitted to build six flats on the site of the Tamworth Arms in Tamworth Road.

The plans have been submitted by a company called London Stretch Ltd.

In 2017 permission was given to turn the pub into hostel style accommodation – this latest application would be an alternative use of the site, if approved.

A statement from Peter Hutchinson Architects on behalf of the applicant said: “Although the hostel use might well be very profitable, in our view and that of our client, it is also problematic.

“The plans show a total of 22 rooms, nine of which are double, suggesting an occupancy of 31 persons; very high considering the size of building.

"None of the rooms have identified kitchen facilities and there is no common provision.

“The windows of five at basement level face small light-wells providing poor daylight and very little outlook.

“There are also serious issues of fire safety – lack of escape and insufficient lobbying in circulation areas – which have not been addressed in the planning. ”

The new planning application would see the building partly demolished at the back to make way for an extension.

It would be made up of two three-bedroom flats and four one-bedroom flats with each having either a balcony or garden.

But the developer adds that care has been taken to preserve the privacy of neighbours to the former pub.

The plans do not include any car parking but there is space for bicycle storage.

The plans were validated by Croydon Council last week and a decision is expected to be made by August 19.
