Roads had to be closed off in Mitcham over the weekend as police responded to reports of possible gunfire.
Despite this turning out not to be the case, officers did find something else.
A Met spokesman said: "Police were called to Tamworth lane at 5.43pm on June 22 following a report of what was thought to be the sound of a gunshot by a car.
"Officers attended and spoke to the driver and passengers of the car, no one suffered any injuries.
"Enquiries determined that an electric motor was thrown at the vehicle following a road rage incident shortly beforehand. The noise was the smashing of the back window."
Specialist units attended and deemed no further danger.
No arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing.
