Last week Croydon Council gave the green light to selling off 60 sites in the borough to Brick by Brick.

The development company is wholly owned by Croydon Council and in the past has faced criticism for building on garage sites and car parks.

But now the council has agreed to sell off more space for development by the company.

The new land will make space for 500 new homes which would be offered at affordable rent or for private sale.

Many of the new sites are for less than 10 homes and include, garages, carparks and infill site on land next to council tower blocks.

It is not a done deal yet and Brick by Brick is set to carry out public consultation on the sites before it applies for planning permission for each of them.

All developments will be subject to Brick by Brick carrying out public consultation and schemes gaining planning permission.

But at a cabinet meeting last week (Monday, June 10) Councillor Helen Pollard was concerned that the consultation was just “going through the motions” as the land has now been transferred from the council to the developer.

Councillor Simon Hall, cabinet member for finance and resources, made assurances that there would be a full consultation process with the council securing the best price for the sites.

He said: “As with previous sites sold to Brick by Brick, the council will get the best possible price based on valuation factors such as the planning consent and the target of making sure that affordable homes make up half of those built.”

Speaking after the meeting, he said: “As well as delivering much-needed full-price and affordable homes for Croydon people, the way we set up Brick by Brick means any profits are reinvested in council services and to build more homes.”

The first Brick by Brick developments are now on sale. Two in Upper Norwood and one in Thornton Heath.

Councillor Alison Butler, cabinet member for homes and Gateway services, said: “Brick by Brick is already delivering hundreds of new and affordable homes right across the borough, and this decision now means they can provide hundreds more.”

She assured said that all sites would be subject to consultation so this list could well change.
