Sutton is the safest borough in London according to data published by Metropolitan Police.

The Met's annual crime data (April 2018-April 2019) showed that Sutton recorded the lowest number of offences of any London borough over the year, reporting just 12,551 in total.

Kingston placed second just behind Sutton (12,692).

Richmond meanwhile were third with 12,871 offences recorded.

Chief Superintendent Sally Benatar, South West BCU Commander, praised the Met Police teams in the South West after the data was released.

"All the officers and staff from the South West Command Unit are working extremely hard with members of the community, partners and (the) Council to prevent and investigate crime and harm.

"We are determined to provide the best possible service to members of the public whenever you need to call on us," she said.

Overall, there were at total of 862,781 criminal offences reported in London between April 2018 - April 2019.

As such, the total number of notifiable offences (TNOs) has increased by 4 per cent, from 829,418 to 862,781 offences.

In particular, the Met highlighted improvements in the fight against serious violent crime such as knife crime.

"The Met is making progress in its drive against violent crime, achieving reductions in murder and stabbings.

"In the past 12 months (18/19 Financial Year) there were 122 homicides recorded by the Met compared with 163 in the previous 12 months (nine of which were as a result of the terror attacks that occurred at London Bridge and Finsbury Park in 2017)," a spokesperson said.

Knife injuries fell by 9.6 per cent from 4,732 to 4,277.

However, instances of knife crime overall showed a slight increase of 0.5 per cent.

Gun crime offences on the other hand fell by 6.8 per cent.
